I have been told by other artists that “you must learn the rules before you can break them”. My 3 year old daughter might disagree with that as her techniques of “De-Clumping” and “Scraggling” are not in any color theory, perspective drawing or art history text books yet somehow more valid and honest than traditional skills. One look at the results will tell you the names are intuitively accurate. Art is creative, free-flow-think-doing which is what I enjoy most. It can be difficult to function as an artist without a grounded sense of yourself and some discipline. There always seems to be a hidden commercial component to any artists work. So my challenge is to create something honest and fun that will affect the viewer. Graffiti Trucker Hats are my most fulfilling body of work to date. Using 3-D puff paint and spray paint on 1980’s mesh caps provides me with an interesting surface and results in a unique interactive emotional and useful final product. The process is incredibly fulfilling. Ultimately art is about the process, I learned this with clay. Throwing clay on the potters wheel is an orgasmic, oneness with the earth, far more intense and addictive than collecting wares from a finished kiln. Rebel French painter Jean Dubuffet refused to associate with any movement and spoke out about art as violent and uncontainable saying “Art doesn’t go to sleep in the bed made for it...Its best moments are when it forgets what it is called”. I agree with his philosophy. Most fields of study are contained by formulas and quantifiable regulations. The most intoxicating facets of fine art are its pliability and subjectivity. Fine art has infinite meaning to viewer and a tendency to lull its creator into a meditative state where time and space can be put on hold.
